Buying a Yacht in Greece?

OSMOSIS Check

With the introduction of higher quality isophthalic and vinyl ester resins in the production of GRP boats, osmosis damage to newer boat models has become less common. Nevertheless the risk is still a concern for many owners or potential buyers of used boats.

A careful and recurring inspection of the hull as part of a survey can reveal weak points in the osmosis protection of a hull and thus avoid expensive renovation cases in good time.

For this purpose, we use high-quality moisture measuring devices, specifically designed for FRP testing, as well as active thermal imaging technics in case of suspected Osmoses presence.

Yacht Surveys Greece - This weeks second inspection was this Caïque

This weeks second inspection was this Caïque, a traditional fishing boat usually found among the waters of the Ionian or Aegean Sea. Traditionally a small wooden trading vessel and rigged with a sail. The caïque is also a typical case of positioning the widest beam far aft, with a long sharp bow. Today, this type of vessel, varying in size are popular for tourist charters.

Caïques were built on the foreshore in a shipyard from pine wood. The hull of the craft is built with sawn ribs and a timber keel, stem, etc. covered with carvel planking, terminated with the deck. In the stern of the caïque the predominant form is the tiller. (see pic).

Each caïque is unique. The majority are built from the boatbuilder's craft and memory having no plans. Her interior is still in the process of being fitted out so her layout at this time is uncertain.

New hydraulic steering.... bye bye tiller.

The mast step.

Super strength hull - keep well clear any plastic yachts!

A bowsprit is stayed by rigging. In the stern of the caïque the predominant form is the tiller. These wooden steering arms are sometimes carved in the face of a dog or animal. The caïque often has a horizontal windlass mounted over the bow. The bow is also known in Greek as the proura or plowri, similar to the English prow.

Cleopatra Marina in Preveza has hard standing for over a 1000 boats. We have made some good contacts here so will look forward to our next visit.

Cleopatra Marina is located on the Aktion Peninsula, in the heart of the Ionian Sea. Near the cities of Preveza and Lefkada, just 1,5 km from Aktion Airport, the marina is easily accessible, well-protected, an ideal starting point to explore the ravishing shores of the Ionian islands.
